Personal Reflections from the President & CEO

Week 5 in the Trenches

We are now five weeks into our new un-normal, having just finished the Passover holiday and entering into Shabbat. We continue to see an increase in calls for help for both food and emergency financial assistance from those directly affected by the Corona virus.

Earlier this week, our Career and Employment Services department held a second webinar on how to apply for re-employment and had over 50 people in attendance. So many people have applied for State assistance and the system is still very broken. I am hopeful that the legislature will agree to provide support retroactive to the date of unemployment, rather than the application date, as many are waiting weeks to receive their checks.

Our staff and volunteers continue to make wellness calls to our homebound seniors and I know how important those calls are to the people making them and receiving them. We are all trying to keep our spirits up as we adjust to what will certainly be a different normal once things begin to open up a bit.

We as an agency, will begin thinking about how we may safely bring people back to work later in the summer and what that may look like. One thing for sure is that when we do re-open our offices, we will have additional safety protocols in place for both staff and clients. There are so many heroes out there doing good work every day, ensuring that our community is safe and protected.

One of our newest initiatives is a “Shop and Share” program designed for older adults who need help with shopping. This is one of our biggest requests as those most vulnerable, elderly seniors with health issues, need to social distance but still need groceries and lack the technical savvy to use online delivery services. We are hoping that this new service will be a wonderful addition to our array of services for seniors in the community.

Please remember, that JFS has funds available to assist those affected from job loss or changes in their work schedules. We have streamlined our process to get you the help you need as quickly as possible.

Thank you to everyone who continues to support JFS and our work in the community.

Stay safe and Shabbat Shalom,
