What to know about National Suicide Prevention Month | Opinion

While September is recognized nationally as Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, it’s important to remember that suicides take place every hour of the day, every day of the week, and every month of the year. It is important to be aware and recognize behaviors that indicate risk of suicide. Knowing where to go for help is essential in providing residents of our South Florida community a bridge to safety and healing when dealing with mental illness.

$1.2 Million Allocated for Mental Health Services in South Florida

Florida State Sen. Shevrin Jones and Florida State Rep. Mike Caruso collaborated for the second consecutive year to secure $1,200,000 in funding for the Jewish Family Services Affordable Behavioral Health Collaboration, which includes Ferd & Gladys Alpert Jewish Family Service (Alpert JFS), Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services (Rales JFS), Goodman Jewish Family Services (Goodman JFS), and Jewish Community Services of South Florida (JCS). The Tri-County Jewish Family Services Mental Health Collaboration, which was created last year, will utilize the funding to serve low-income, underprivileged individuals in Broward, Miami-Dade, and Palm Beach counties with mental healthcare.

Larry the tech guy helps senior citizens connect with modern gadgets

When retired businessman Larry Orbach speaks in the lobby of the Weisman Delray Community Center, seniors listen. Orbach is a regular volunteer at the center, which is part of Rales Jewish Family Services.

But you don’t have to be Jewish, or a member, to benefit from what they offer. Every Monday for three hours, Larry mans a technology help desk where he patiently walks any senior who stops by through step-by-step instructions on how their gadgets work.
