Bringing Summer Joy Through Generosity:

A Heartfelt Letter from Claudia and Joe

"Dear Rales JFS Scholarship Donor,

Words cannot describe the joy you have brought to our family by granting the YMCA Scholarships for our triplets to attend camp this summer. Your generosity is heartfelt and a true act of love for the children and families you are helping.

We have guardianship of our deceased son’s children who will turn 8 in November. Both my husband and myself are retired and our income is our Social Security benefits. There is really little to spare when it comes to extra’s for the children, especially since it is always times 3!!!!

You made it possible for the triplets to be engaged daily with activities that benefitted them emotionally, physically and socially in a safe environment while being supervised. They would wake up in the morning happy and excited to be going to camp. They made many new friends throughout the summer while enjoying all the activities the Y had to offer

Once again we can’t thank you enough for your generous contribution. It was your generosity that made it possible for them to attend camp this year.

Forever grateful,

Claudia and Joe & the Triplets❤️"

Coffee and a Conversation:

Insights on Israel's History and Future with

Professor Yoav Alon

Last week, Rales JFS hosted Coffee and a Conversation with Professor Yoav Alon from Tel Aviv University's Department of Middle Eastern and African Studies. Professor Alon, an internationally-renowned historian specializing in Jordanian history, British Empire in the Middle East, and tribal societies, provided deep insights into the historical roots of the October 7th crisis and its current implications. His expertise on the two-state solution and the role of tribes in the region sparked enlightening discussions on the future prospects between Israelis and Palestinians.

During the event held at the Shirley & Barton Weisman Delray Community Center, Professor Alon shared from his acclaimed books, including "The Making of Jordan: Tribes, Colonialism, and the Modern State" and "The Shaykh of Shaykhs: Mithqal al-Fayiz and Tribal Leadership in Modern Jordan." Attendees gained valuable perspectives on historical episodes rarely explored, such as the deportation of Irgun and Lehi members to Africa by the British mandate government in Palestine.

Debbie & Howard Belford Recognized as

June Donor of the Month

Welcome to the spotlight section of our website, where we proudly showcase our Donor of the Month. At Rales JFS, we believe in honoring those whose unwavering dedication and support have become an integral part of our mission to serve the community.

Each month, we shine a light on individuals or organizations within our Rales JFS family whose generosity and commitment exemplify the values we hold dear. Join us in celebrating these exceptional donors who embody the spirit of compassion and service, making a meaningful difference in the lives of those we serve.

Rales Jewish Family Services recognizes Debbie & Howard Belford as the June 2024 Donor of the Month for their generous support of Rales JFS!

Shortly after moving to South Florida in 1997, Debbie Belford discovered Rales JFS while exploring options for philanthropic involvement. The agency's extensive community outreach and dedication to enriching lives, from children to seniors, deeply inspired her. The comprehensive array of programs and services provided by Rales JFS also resonated with Debbie and she became a strong advocate for their efforts, particularly their support for seniors and Holocaust survivors who have faced unimaginable challenges. Programs like the Passover Seder and Café Europa offer socialization and opportunities for attendees to connect with their peers, fostering personal connections that are truly life changing. Additionally, the Jacobson Family Food Pantry plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity, with weekly deliveries that many clients depend on. The appreciation for the volunteers, who deliver these meals and often form meaningful bonds with the clients, add a personal touch.

Witnessing the generosity of others in our community motivated Debbie to make a planned gift to Rales JFS. It is vital to identify needs and create plans to address them. She and her husband Howard, inspired by conversations with Danielle, decided to support the Volunteer Program. Having volunteered for non-profits for years, I understand the critical role volunteers play in the success of the agencies they serve. By supporting volunteer programming, we have been able to train and support dedicated volunteers who are essential to the success of Rales JFS’ community outreach initiatives.

Debbie shared, “Looking ahead, I hope to enhance volunteer engagement by offering tokens of appreciation during National Volunteer Week, expanding training classes, and increasing the marketing and publicity of volunteer opportunities. Volunteers are an integral part of the JFS family, dedicating their time and talents to those who rely on the agency's assistance. By increasing the number and commitment of our volunteers, we can further enhance our programming and better serve the community. I aim to lead by example, inspiring others to find their passion and live by the principles of Tikkun Olam—through acts of kindness that bring happiness to others.”

“Howard and I are privileged to support Rales JFS and their Volunteer Services Department. We are heartened by the incredible impact JFS has on our local community and consider it an honor to contribute to their mission.” Debbie and Howard feel that volunteer support is essential to the success of any agency, and there are many ways to be involved, whether through financial commitment or personal time. “We find great gratification in our support and hope others will too.”

On a personal note, Debbie’s passion is her family. With three children and six grandchildren, they cherish sharing their journey with them. They consider themselves blessed to live in a beautiful community, surrounded by incredible friends, and enjoy the time we spend together.

In honoring the Belford's as our Donors of the Month, we celebrate not only their generosity but also their commitment to building a stronger, more connected community. Through their support and advocacy, the Belford’s exemplify the impact of individual contributions creating a brighter future for us all.

Meet Jordan Denker

Jordan Denker is a rising senior at Florida State University, majoring in Communication Media and Studies with a minor in Psychology. Recently, Jordan had the incredible opportunity to study abroad in Florence, Italy for six weeks, which deepened a love for travel. In addition to traveling, Jordan enjoys going to concerts and listening to live music.

With a passion for mental health, Jordan aims to attend graduate school after completing undergraduate studies to obtain a mental health counseling license.

Jordan states she is, "looking forward to the internship opportunity with JFS and working with some amazing people." We are excited to have Jordan on board this summer and anticipate the unique perspectives and enthusiasm brought to Rales JFS.

Meet Ryan Kalina

Ryan Kalina is a public health major and sociology minor at Florida State University, hailing from Delray Beach, FL. As a forward-thinking student, Ryan is eager to expand his experience in the public health field and plans to attend graduate school for public health.

Ryan enjoys photography and engaging in discussions about current issues. He looks forward to gaining a deeper understanding of the operations required to run the many services that Rales JFS provides.

We are delighted to welcome Ryan this summer and are eager to see how his contributions positively impact our work at Rales JFS.

Meet Leora Bakst

Leora Bakst is a second-year psychology student at Reichman University in Israel, originally from Boca Raton, Florida. She has been deeply involved in academic and extracurricular activities, shaping her passion for psychology and community service.

In high school, Leora held various leadership and volunteer roles, including serving on the leadership board for Storm for Israel and participating in Yachad Club, advocating for individuals with special needs. She also formed meaningful relationships with Holocaust survivors through the March to Miriam program and supported autistic children through the Friendship Circle.

In her free time, Leora enjoys running, baking, cooking, and drawing. She aims to integrate her passion for psychology into a career that helps others and contributes positively to the community.

A quote Leora loves is, "The imperfect project you actually complete is worth more than the perfect project you never finish." We are thrilled to have Leora join us this summer and look forward to the unique insights and passion she brings to Rales JFS.

Meet Ella Singer

Ella Singer, from South Florida, is currently a senior at the University of Florida pursuing dual degrees in Psychology with an emphasis on Behavior Analysis and Criminology. Her campus involvement includes roles as an Operations Associate for on-campus gym facilities, a crisis hotline counselor at the Alachua County Crisis Center, and a community ambassador for the Victim Services & Rape Crisis Center. Ella also serves as a Research Assistant at the Florida Social Cognition and Emotion Lab and holds leadership positions within her sorority chapter and the Panhellenic Council.

With aspirations to become a forensic psychologist, Ella plans to attend graduate school for clinical psychology after completing her undergraduate studies. Beyond academics and work, Ella enjoys reading, spending time with family and friends, traveling, running, and outdoor activities, especially at the beach.

“My internship at JFS has been extremely rewarding thus far, and I believe that I’m gaining valuable insights and experience in the field I hope to work in one day. I am looking forward to continuing to grow both personally and professionally this summer.”

We are excited to have Ella join us this summer and look forward to witnessing her continued growth and contributions at Rales JFS.
