Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services is proud to announce April & Roger Leavy as our December Donor of the Month. For the past 14 years, April and Roger have supported Rales JFS in ways that have created a significant impact in the community. April has served as co-chair for a number of events, Roger has served for many years on the Board of Directors and is currently Vice Chair of Food Programs, and they both volunteer regularly at the Jacobson Family Food Pantry. Their introduction to Jewish Family Services began in 2006, while dealing with a health crisis that brought them far from home and full of uncertainty. It was there that an employee from the local JFS approached them, offering them solace and support. April and Roger were so touched and impressed by how this organization was willing to help them with anything they needed in that moment. This meeting was the impetus for their commitment to Rales JFS.
As they watched their parents’ age, they felt compelled to ensure that seniors in the community would receive the proper care and support they needed. This led to the establishment of the Eisen-Leavy Fund for Senior Services. Another pressing need in the community became just as important to them. The realization that there were so many in their community facing food insecurity touched their hearts deeply. It was an easy decision for them to become more involved with the Jacobson Family Food Pantry, sponsoring initiatives like Hanukkah this year, ensuring that families can enjoy the warmth and joy of the holiday season despite their challenges. They encourage friends and family to donate to the food pantry in honor of their birthdays or simply to challenge the community to come together and support those in need.
Whether it is delivering meals in the community or hosting a food drive, it has become more than just about providing meals. They shared how the connections they have made with clients has meant the most. “When we drop off holiday meals, we’ve often been invited inside to share a moment together. Sitting down to talk, enjoying a cookie, and simply spending time with these individuals has become something truly special.” In an effort to ensure that the ongoing needs of the community are met, April and Roger having created a lasting gift for Rales JFS through Create a Living Legacy. It was important to them that no matter what challenges lie ahead, the community will continue to thrive and receive enduring support.
Sharing this passion of philanthropy with their daughter and son-in-law has brought them pride and inspiration. They hope that many in the next generation follow suit and carry forward the values of community and generosity. They believe that, “Giving not only enriches the lives of those we help, but is also brings a sense of purpose and joy to our own lives.” Something else that brings April and Roger endless joy are their daughter and son-in-law, Alex and Joel, and their grandchildren, Aiden, and Jordan. Aside from the cherished time spent with family and friends, they make time for travel, staying active and Tassel Depot, the business they have worked so hard to build.
