Week 15 In the Trenches Here we are, another week gone by, Florida reporting increases in positive cases of the coronavirus, people still unable to receive their unemployment benefits, reports of fears of rising mortgage delinquencies, hurricane season in swing, summer camps trying to reopen only to shut down a few days later………..and then reopen again, students and parents waiting patiently to see what their fall will look like in regards to in-person or distance learning.

Week 10 In the Trenches I’ve been thinking a lot about the children of our community this week. Actually, I think the better word would be worrying. I’m worried for our children who had to finish off their last few months of school at home, struggling to learn online. I know many made this transition easily, but what about our children who don’t have a WiFi connection, or share one computer with multiple siblings, if they even have a computer. I worry about our children who already struggle with completing schoolwork and don’t have the social outlet they need by being with together with their peers. I worry about our children who are facing uncharted waters this summer and whose summer will be like none other.

Week 9 In the Trenches Hurricane Season starts in two weeks………………let that sink in. Most reports I have seen are predicting a very active Hurricane storm season. Typically, households are encouraged to ready themselves for the season by stocking up on non-perishables, batteries, and other essential supplies in preparation for whatever storm comes our way. For individuals and families still waiting for unemployment checks and older adults suffering from a reduction in their monthly income, I worry about how they will be able to adequately prepare for this year’s Hurricane season.

Week 8 In the Trenches Another week as come and gone, and yet things keep getting worse, not better. Families and individuals struggling due to job loss are still waiting for their unemployment checks to arrive. Difficult questions about what bills to pay and what bills to skip are being made every day. There is so much coverage about this issue all over the media, yet no one seems to be able to make it better. Those same individuals are now relying on non-profits like JFS to fill the void and ensure food is there for their families, rent and utilities are being paid, cable and internet so their children can finish school remotely and we are all still on a stay at home order.

Week 7 in the Trenches - I have been trying to blog each Friday to keep our community updated with the activities and happenings going on at JFS. Last week slipped away from me and I just couldn’t get it done before Shabbat rolled around. So here I am, a few days late, but wanting to make sure I keep you updated on what’s happening in our community.

Week 6 in the Trenches – It has now been six weeks of our new un-normal and every day we seem to all be anxiously awaiting further guidance as to when we can begin re-entry. To even think that we can just flip a switch and go back to how we were operating before is both illogical and non-reality.

Week 5 in the Trenches We are now five weeks into our new un-normal, having just finished the Passover holiday and entering into Shabbat. We continue to see an increase in calls for help for both food and emergency financial assistance from those directly affected by the Corona virus.

Week 3 in the Trenches We are now coming to the end of our third week of our new un-normal. I wish I could say that it’s been easy, but I find myself becoming more and more concerned about cases of domestic abuse and child abuse going up.

Last week we celebrated Thanksgiving, a time to reflect what we are thankful for. For me personally, it is a pretty easy exercise…my 3 beautiful daughters, my wonderful new husband, a job that I love and gives me so much personal satisfaction, a great family, terrific friends and exceptional colleagues.

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month and National Caregiver Month. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, there are more than 15 million Alzheimer's and dementia caregivers in the United States. Caregiver burnout is greatest among those caring for an individual with memory loss due to the persistent risk factors involved in the disease. JFS' Caregiver Resources & Respite program is a great resource for Caregivers and their loved ones.

The summer is flying by. Before you know it, it will be time for our children to go back to school. As August approaches, children finishing up camp and school is front and center on their parent's minds. We are so proud to say that our Center for Families & Children has made a tremendous impact in the lives of our families by providing summer camp scholarships. A record total of $84,600 enabled over 130 children to attend camp! That includes 12 special needs families were provided assistance they so desperately needed.
