Mature Drivers: Get a Better “CarFit” in Delray 9 am–Noon on November 2, 2012
A special opportunity to help mature drivers stay safe on the road is coming to the Weisman Delray Community Center on November 2, 2012, from 9:00 am to Noon. CarFit, a free safety checkup to see how well vehicles “fit” their older drivers will take only 20 minutes in the Center’s parking lot. The Weisman Center of Ruth Rales Jewish Family Service is located at 7091 West Atlantic Avenue in Delray Beach. Local residents are encouraged to join in by calling 561-558-2100 to make an appointment.
“We are delighted to bring Carfit back to our Delray Center,” said Risa Demato, JFS Delray Site Director. “It was a great success for many seniors in January and we are so glad to provide this service again at no cost to participants. This safety check for the car helps keep mature drivers safe on the road.”
A national education program, CarFit was developed by the American Society on Aging in collaboration with AAA, AARP, and the American Occupational Therapy Association. Trained technicians or health professionals use a checklist to review each mature driver’s “fit” for maximum comfort and safety in his or her personal vehicle. The team may make recommendations to consider, but no changes will be made to the cars. The CarFit program also provides information and materials that could enhance older drivers’ safety or increase their mobility in the community.
The CarFit literature clearly explains the importance of increasing safety for mature drivers, “Older drivers are often the safest drivers in that they are more likely to wear their seatbelts, and less likely to speed or drink and drive. However, older drivers are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when a crash does occur due to the greater fragility of their aging bodies.
“Driver safety programs improve adult driver safety by addressing cognitive abilities and skills, however, older drivers can also improve their safety by ensuring their cars are properly adjusted for them. A proper fit in one's car can greatly increase not only the driver's safety but also the safety of others.”
