Meet Vera & Bill

Senior Services

JFS Care Specialists help families face many challenges in coping with the changing circumstances of elderly parents, and loved ones. JFS is committed to the concept of “aging in place” by enabling older individual to maintain lives in the community for as long as possible.

Vera and her husband, Bill were enjoying a fairly typical retirement life until she started to notice some changes in his mood and his memory. A trip to his family physician resulted in a referral to a neurologist. Vera’s husband was diagnosed with dementia. She was immediately overcome with anxiety about their future and how she would cope as a caregiver. Over the next few months, his condition deteriorated and his moods ranged from calm to anger and depression. A friend told Vera about the Caregiver Resources and Respite program. The weekly support group sessions were an invaluable source of information and emotional support.

Vera learned about community resources and coping strategies. She also got connected with Rales JFS programs such as Tech S.O.S. and mental health counseling. Vera has begun to consider placement for her husband in a local memory care unit. “Without the group members and the JFS staff person, I was unable to think clearly about the future. I now feel better about the choices I have to make.”
