Volunteers remain critical to JFS’ success as the agency would not be able to provide help to as many people in our community without volunteer's gift of time and talents. JFS' Belford Family Volunteer Department volunteers mentor children and teens, provide rides for seniors in need of transportation, deliver freshly prepared meals through our Adele Loeb & Les Nackman Meals on Wheels program, and reduce the isolation of homebound seniors through daily telephone calls, friendly visits and care packages.
When Mariah was five years old, she came to the United States from Haiti with her father, older sister, and older brother. Mariah’s mother and younger sister remain in Haiti to this day. While they are in touch, they have not seen each other in five years. Mariah and her older sister were referred to the Community Mentoring Program to be matched with mentors as their mother was not in the States and their father worked long, hard days. At that time, Mariah was very quiet; she did not have any friends and was afraid to be apart from her sister. The two mentors would make plans to do things with the girls, both independently and together. After a year with her mentor, Mariah has become more independent and will happily go on outings without her sister. Mariah’s confidence has grown tremendously and she has developed an ability to get her needs met. Her relationship with her mentor had enabled Mariah to grow into a confident young lady.
Over 500 volunteers donated more than 9,500 hours of service saving JFS over $200K in labor.
26 adults volunteered as mentors to young children through our Community Mentoring Program.
While use of Kibbitz and Ride volunteer drivers was on pause due to COVID, we were able to continue providing transportation to medical appointments for our clients through Uber Health.
During this time JFS provided 768 rides to medical appointments.
