Meet Lea & Mark

JFS Center for Families & Children

Each year since its inception in 2013, the JFS Center for Families & Children has experienced tremendous growth. Through the Center, JFS has been able to reach out and improve the lives of hundreds of families and children in our community. JFS recognizes the enormous emotional and financial challenges that special needs families face. JFS Special Needs Services offers a number of supports for parents, siblings and caregivers of a special needs family member.

Lea is a mom of two boys, ages 13 and 10, who both have Duchene Muscular Dystrophy. Her husband, Mark, was laid off due to Covid-19. In October, Lea reached out for help with bills and JFS was able to assist through our Covid-19 relief fund. Their two sons had appointments with a physician specialist in Gainesville but had no way to get there. Lea located a used wheelchair accessible van in good condition but they could not afford the $9300 cost. The Outreach coordinator spoke with Danielle, who approved half the cost of the van, and also reached out to other community partners to help with the rest. In the end, the other half was paid for by Boca Raton Synagogue and a philanthropic family. Lea’s family is thrilled with their new van because it has significantly improved the quality of life for this struggling family.
