JFS Welcomes VISTA Volunteer Committed to Helping Local Holocaust Survivors
We are thrilled to welcome Natasha Torres to our JFS family - an esteemed VISTA volunteer provided by the Americorp VISTA program. Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services feels honored to have been chosen by the AJFCA, as part of its Holocaust Survivor Services Initiative, as one of thirteen agencies nationwide to take part in the Americorp VISTA program which officially begins today.
Through this opportunity, Natasha will serve a one-year term specifically dedicated to meeting the needs of our vulnerable Holocaust survivor population, with initiatives including:
• Working with other agencies serving Holocaust
survivors to learn best practices which can be applied to our programs;
• Coordinating the pro-bono dental program (DASH) for Holocaust survivors;
• Marketing and scheduling trainings related to cultural competency;
• Coordination socialization activities for Holocaust survivors at our senior center; and
• Educating the community on services provided to Holocaust survivors by JFS.
“Over the last fiscal year, we’ve seen significant growth in Case Management services for seniors,” stated Danielle Hartman, President & CEO of Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services. “In the 2013/2014 fiscal year, 719 seniors, including 309 Holocaust survivors, received help from JFS including case management, homecare and personal care coordination, friendly visits, rides to stay mobile, and other care coordination services enabling them to age in place with dignity. Natasha’s assistance will be instrumental in helping us address this rise in needs.”
Last week, many of the VISTAs convened in Philadelphia where they met Lee Sherman, AJFCA President/CEO; Jennie Gates Beckman, Director of Volunteer Strategy & Repair the World Programming; Liz Woodward, Director of Older Adult & Disabilities Services; Crystal Biles & Autumn Rose representing the Maryland/Delaware Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) State Office; and Aviva Sufian, Special Envoy for U.S. Holocaust Survivor Services.
Ruth & Norman Rales Jewish Family Services wishes the best of luck to Natasha and to her all of her counterpart volunteers across the country that are embarking on a similar and noble journey.
