Holocaust Survivors Find Comfort in “Nosh and Nachas” Program
Last week, JFS clients who are Holocaust survivors gathered together for a little “Nosh and Nachas” at the Weisman Delray Community Center. Translated literally, food and happiness is what this program brings to Holocaust survivors, especially for Sheva Vapne.
During the program, Sheva voiced her heartfelt concerns regarding the ongoing violence in Israel and around the world, and described how she worries that another “Holocaust” could happen again. But then, while participating in “Nosh and Nachas,” she expressed how happy and thankful she felt to be in this group which provided her much needed relief from all of the stress and sadness taking place worldwide. This program provided Sheva with a positive and uplifting activity. Even if for a short time, the distraction allowed Sheva to feel relaxed and hopeful again. Sheva feels so grateful to have these positive events to look forward to in her life.
“Nosh and Nachas provides our survivors the opportunity to spend time with other survivors, which is extremely valuable and meaningful to them,” stated JFS Case Manager, Susan Price, MSW. “Because of their shared experience as Holocaust survivors, they give each other a sense of kinship and understanding that no one else could ever completely fulfill. It truly improves their emotional well- being and quality of life.” JFS also provides transportation for the many home-bound members of this social group. Susan added, “It is so powerful to be in the room; it is a way for the survivors to show their strength and courage in living positive lives despite their tragedy and persecution.”
